AI Living Room Redesign in 5 Minutes: My Real Before/After + 10 “Keep-It-Real” Prompts

beginner ai interior test

Hi! I’m basically a total beginner at interior design—but I still want my space to feel nicer. So I tried an AI interior tool to see if I could get new living room ideas in just a few minutes (without moving a single piece of furniture).

In this post, I’ll share:
  • The quick 5-minute steps I followed
  • My real Before/After result (yep, I actually did it!)
  • What AI changed the most
  • And 10 copy-paste prompts that help keep the result more realistic (layout, floor, TV area, curtains, wall AC)

Quick note: AI results are best as concept inspiration, not a perfect renovation blueprint. But it’s super helpful for picking a vibe—lighting, colors, and materials.

What You Need (Super Simple)

  • 1 photo of your room (wide photo is best)
  • Bright lighting (open curtains + turn on lights if needed)
  • One style idea: Modern / Cozy / Minimal / Japandi
  • (Optional) A short list of what you want to keep: wooden floor, TV area, curtains, wall AC
Beginner photo tip: Try not to tilt the camera too much. Straight photos usually get better AI results.

My 5-Minute AI Living Room Redesign Steps

Step 1) Pick an AI tool

I used RoomGPT.io because it’s super straightforward: upload → select room type → generate.

(If you want to make mood boards later, Canva can be useful too—but RoomGPT is great for quick concept images.)

Step 2) Upload your photo + choose “Living Room”

Upload your photo and select Living Room.
Tiny tip that helps a lot: If the photo is messy, AI often keeps the mess. Even just clearing the floor/table area can improve the “after” image.

Step 3) Try a prompt (2 easy examples)

Prompts are just short instructions. For beginners, the easiest upgrade is adding lighting words.

Example 1 — Bright & Clean Modern
“A modern living room with white walls, a light wood floor, and lots of green plants. Bright natural sunlight, airy and clean.”

Example 2 — Warm & Cozy
“A cozy living room with warm ambient lighting, a soft gray sofa, layered textiles, and a calm relaxing mood.”
Below I also included 10 “keep-it-real” prompts. I’m sharing them as templates (not every single one was tested yet in my space), but they’re designed to keep the result more realistic.

Step 4) Generate 3–6 results and compare

I recommend generating a few variations and checking:
  • color palette
  • lighting mood
  • materials (wood / fabric / rattan)
  • how much the layout changes

My Real Before/After (What Happened!)

I actually tried it with my own photo. The “Before” photo was taken while traveling—this space was kind of a studio setup (living room + sleeping area). Then I ran it through RoomGPT with “Living Room” selected.

1. BEFORE — Original Photo

Original studio-style living room photo with wooden floor, dark curtains, TV area on the left, and sliding glass door.
Before — My original photo (studio-style living room)

2. AFTER — AI Result

AI-generated living room concept with brighter curtains, airy daylight, and a coastal-inspired color palette.
After — AI concept result (brighter, coastal vibe)

What changed the most (my beginner opinion)

Here’s what I noticed right away:
  1. The whole vibe got lighter
My original photo felt practical, but the darker curtains made it feel a bit heavier. The AI version looked way brighter and more “vacation-like.”
  2. The colors shifted
The AI pushed a fresh palette—more white + soft blue + natural textures.
  3. Lighting and curtains were the big difference
The AI basically screamed: “Let there be LIGHT.” And honestly… it looked better.
  4. Reality check
Sometimes AI changes things it shouldn’t (like the outside view or structural details). So for me, the best approach is:
Use AI for ideas, then pick the parts that are actually doable in real life.

Easy Real-Life Ideas I’m Actually Willing to Try

From my AI result, these feel realistic and beginner-friendly:
  • Dark curtains → white sheer curtains + light beige curtains
  • Add a neutral rug (jute / light beige) to define the space
  • Use a simple palette: off-white + wood + soft blue
  • Add a warm lamp for cozy lighting at night
  • Add a couple of natural storage baskets
  • Clear surfaces (less clutter = instantly nicer)

10 “Keep-It-Real” Prompts (Layout + Floor + TV + Curtains + Wall AC)

If you want the AI result to stay closer to your actual room, add “keep” rules like these.

Shared rules (included in every prompt)
  • Keep the same layout and room structure
  • Keep the sliding glass door and balcony
  • Keep the wooden floor
  • Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner
  • Keep the TV area on the left (low wooden console)
  • Realistic, practical, no dramatic structural changes

1) Bright Modern (White + Wood)

“Modern bright living room. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left with a low wooden console. Replace the dark curtains with white sheer curtains and light beige curtains. White walls, light wood, minimal decor, bright natural sunlight, clean and airy, realistic and practical.”

2) Modern Neutral + Black Accents

“Modern neutral living room with black accents. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Use white, beige, and light gray tones with matte black accents, soft indirect lighting, minimal clutter, realistic materials, tidy styling.”

3) Modern With Smart Storage

“Modern living room with smart storage. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Add closed storage cabinets, hide cables, keep surfaces clean, bright sunlight, simple furniture, practical and realistic.”

4) Japandi (Warm Minimal)

“Japandi living room. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Natural wood, warm neutral tones, low furniture, linen textures, soft warm lighting, calm minimal styling, clean and balanced, realistic and practical.”

5) Japandi Evening Mood

“Japandi cozy evening mood. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Add a floor lamp, warm indirect lighting (2700K feel), beige and oak palette, simple decor, relaxing and realistic.”

6) Cozy Layered Textiles

“Cozy living room with layered textiles. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Soft gray or beige sofa, plush rug, warm ambient lighting, textured cushions and throw blankets, calm and inviting, realistic and practical.”

7) Cozy Small Studio Layout

“Cozy small studio living room. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Space-saving furniture, uncluttered surfaces, bright daytime + warm night lighting, functional layout, realistic and practical.”

8) Minimalist Hotel Style

“Minimalist hotel-style living room. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Neutral palette, clean furniture, no clutter, elegant textures, soft indirect lighting, balanced composition, realistic.”

9) Soft Minimal (Not Too Cold)

“Soft minimalist living room. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Light gray and warm beige palette, gentle daylight, simple rug, minimal decor, cozy but clean, realistic.”

10) Coastal (Still Realistic)

“Coastal living room style in a small studio. Keep the same layout and room structure. Keep the sliding glass door and balcony. Keep the wooden floor. Keep the wall-mounted air conditioner. Keep the TV area on the left. Replace the dark curtains with white sheer curtains. Add light blue and beige accents, jute rug, subtle rattan details, bright natural sunlight, realistic and practical.”

My 3 Favorite “Fix-It” Keywords

  • Too dark? → bright natural sunlight
  • Too fake? → realistic, practical, no structural changes
  • Layout keeps changing? → keep the same layout

Final Thoughts

As a beginner, this was honestly fun. AI didn’t give me a perfect “final answer,” but it helped me see possibilities fast—especially with lighting, curtains, and color palettes.

Next, I want to run more variations using the realistic prompts above and try the easiest upgrades first (curtains, rug, lighting).

What vibe do you like best—Modern, Cozy, Minimal, or Japandi?

Transparency Note

  • My “After” image is an AI-generated concept based on my original photo. Results vary depending on photo quality, lighting, and prompt wording.
  • The prompts above are shared as beginner-friendly templates (not all were tested yet), so feel free to tweak them for your space.
